Why Environmental zones
A study published by the United Nations in 2018 predicts the percentage of the population living in urban areas is set to grow from 55% in 2018 up to 68% by 2050. This will amount to some 2.5 billion extra people living in cities worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes poor air quality as the leading cause of premature death globally. If the city you live in does not deploy an environmental zone, it’s likely that you are at greater risk from an invisible killer; air pollution.
A Low Emission Zone (LEZ), sometimes simply referred to as an environmental zone, is a technique used to combat the negative effects of air pollution in densely populated urban areas. Highly polluting vehicles, such as trucks or large vans, are restricted from entering a zone which is automatically enforced using ANPR cameras. If a vehicle does not meet the permissible emission standards of the environmental zone, an image of the violating vehicle is automatically sent to the local authority and a ticket is issued to the owner of the vehicle.
Our Environmental Zone Enforcement system uses ANPR cameras to detect violators entering the restricted area of environmental zones. An environmental zone is an area with a restriction for specific vehicle groups to reduce emissions of pollutants. Our system is fully certified and complies with the high standards required by the judicial authorities. Our system has an incredibly high accuracy and can automatically generate a certified violation report for the authorities, including images for additional evidence.
Fine particulates and other pollutants severely foul the air in urban areas. Traffic is one of the main villains in this, which is why more municipalities are introducing low emission zones; areas where polluting vehicles are not allowed. Speed limits on highways are also being lowered in order to reduce emissions.
